- Exhibition Highlights -

'Modern Times: Records Spinning, Pop Music Born' invites you to travel back in time and follow the 'Black Cat' and 'Black Dog' to the creative and vibrant modern era of the 1930s! Centered on Taiwanese records, this exhibition weaves together the gaps in time and space through precious historical artifacts and musical stories, allowing visitors to return to the very origins of pop music.

Using 'Dadaocheng' as the narrative backdrop, this exhibition reviews the unique perspectives within the island's musical humanities through this iconic location: enter the 'Time-Travel Old House' zone to begin the phonograph overture in a grand hall; experience the 'Day and Night of Dadaocheng,' which presents the scenery of the past through shifting visual lighting; and visit the 'Brazil Cafe,' a tea house once run by Taiwan's first female star, Chun-Chun, where romantic interactions between musicians took place.

In 'Modern Times: Records Spinning, Pop Music Born,' you can admire over a hundred precious items, including century-old phonographs, 78 RPM records, private manuscripts, and never-before-seen recordings and photographs. Additionally, the Taipei Music Center has specially recreated the famous 1930s 'Peacock Cafe' in the first-floor lobby of the Cultural Cube, serving drinks recreated from original cocktail recipes, allowing you to indulge your taste buds in the purest modern romance and old-school luxury.

Through the sound waves in these records, we will reconnect the past and the present, catch a glimpse of the shadows of classic songs as they flow through time, and gain a new understanding of the cultural influence generated over the past century.

[Peacock Coffee Shop] In the 1930s, coffee shop culture became a trend in Taiwan, combining exquisite cuisine, alcoholic beverages and female waitresses, becoming a corner of the city where modernity and romance are intertwined. The women chat with people to relieve their boredom and provide emotional comfort, allowing people to temporarily forget their worries in the fragrance and light. In 1932, tea merchant Guo Borong opened the "Peacock Coffee Shop" in Dadaocheng, creating a modern space with gorgeous decoration and 21 hostesses; he later founded "Boyou Music Records", combining music and entertainment, leading the early development of Taiwanese pop music. The special exhibition "Modern Times: Records Turn, Pop Is Born" is a replica of the "Peacock Coffee Shop" on the first floor of the Taipei Music Center Cultural Hall. With the coffee shop as the center, it integrates the musical elements of Boyu Music and reproduces the coffee culture of a hundred years ago through space design and retro details. In addition, visitors who bring their exhibition admission vouchers (including physical tickets and electronic tickets) to the Peacock Coffee Shop can enjoy a set of exquisite snacks with their exhibition tickets.
