- Trip Introduction -
・Yehliu Geopark
Yehliu Geopark stretches about 1.7 kilometers from the entrance to the end of the cape, with its widest point measuring less than 300 meters. Because the coastline runs nearly perpendicular to the geological layers and structural lines, combined with the effects of wave erosion, rock weathering, relative land-sea movement, and crustal movement, the area features rare and rich geological landscapes. It is a natural geological classroom and a wonderland of strange rocks. From weathered rocks, erosion trenches, and sea cliffs to potholes and the long, narrow cape, every step offers a surprising discovery.
・Shifen Old Street
Shifen, located in the Pingxi District of New Taipei City, is arguably the earliest developed and largest settlement in the area. The Pingxi Line, a railway branch built for coal mining, winds along the Keelung River valley. After the decline of the mining industry, it connected charming old streets like Shifen, Pingxi, and Jingtong. The main feature here is that the old street and the train tracks are connected, allowing visitors to experience the novelty of having a train pass right in front of their door, as well as the fun of strolling along the tracks. It is a famous filming location for many movies and TV dramas.
Around Shifen Station, you will find Shifen Old Street and the Jing'an Suspension Bridge. Here, you can stroll along the shops by the tracks and enjoy local snacks. The most unique landscape is not the old buildings, but the sight of trains passing right in front of the shops! In recent years, it has become a must-visit destination for international tourists in Taiwan. When you come to Shifen, writing your blessings and wishes on a sky lantern with a brush and releasing it under the guidance of the shop owner, while watching it rise slowly into the sky over the small town, is the most beautiful impression of Shifen.
・Shifen Waterfall
Shifen Waterfall is located in Xiliao Village, Pingxi District, New Taipei City, within the Shifen Scenic Area between Dahua Station and Shifen Station on the railway branch. The original meaning of 'Shifen' refers to ten households working together to build their homes here. The Shifen Scenic Area is geographically situated on a tributary of the Keelung River and is classified as a waterfall-valley type among Taiwan's scenic spots. The Keelung River is the largest and longest river in the northern region. Due to headward erosion and the surrounding dissected terrain, many faults and strange rocks have been formed. As the river flows over these faults and rocks, the high flow velocity creates many spectacular waterfalls. From Houtong to Sandiaoling, and extending to Shifenliao and Pingxi, a series of cascading waterfalls are formed, with Shifen Waterfall being the most famous. Shifen Waterfall has a drop of about 20 meters and a width of about 40 meters. The outer rock layers tilt in the opposite direction of the water flow, making it a cataract waterfall, similar to Niagara Falls in North America, which earned it the reputation of being the 'Taiwan Niagara Falls.' The pool below the waterfall is extremely deep, and the mist often lingers. When sunlight refracts through it, a beautiful rainbow arches over it, giving it the name 'Rainbow Pool,' making it a very popular tourist spot. Downstream, giant boulders stand scattered, a unique landscape formed by the erosion and scouring of the cliff face, followed by continuous collapse and retreat, fully revealing the beauty of nature.
