Although HOG would have been a logical code, OGG was chosen to avoid confusion with the Honolulu airport code (HON). Captain Jimmy Hogg was a highly respected pilot, a native of Kaua'i, and a key figure in Hawaii's aviation history. He started as a mechanic's helper in the 1930s and became a pilot and director of flight operations. Hogg was instrumental in establishing inter-island air service, including flying the first inter-island flight after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. In 1946, when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was assigning three-letter codes to airports, the code HOG was considered for Kahului. To avoid confusion with the Honolulu (HON) airport code, Captain Hogg chose OGG.
