상품 설명
130 years ago, the Slavic settlement of Chemnitz became one of the largest and richest industrial cities in Germany. At that time, the incredibly fast-growing city with its many smoking chimneys was known as the Manchester of Saxony, or “Rußchamtz” (Smoke City). Saxony's linen bleaching monopoly and its proximity to the mining industry in the Erzgebirge region contributed to the early development of industrial infrastructure. With the development of the Spinning Jenny and the steam engine in England, the floodgates also burst open here within just a few years. Everything imaginable was built: textile machinery, locomotives, bicycles, cars. The German arms industry also had a strong presence here until the end of World War II. This marked the end of the city's rise. Chemnitz became Karl-Marx-Stadt and then Chemnitz again. Today, you will experience a city in search of its identity. It is a down-to-earth place that offers its residents plenty of creative freedom and still thrives on industry. As Europe's Capital of Culture in 2025, Chemnitz aims to write a new chapter. This time, in the field of culture. During the city tour, you will discover the modern city center, including its origins in what is now the Schloßviertel (Palace District), as well as areas shaped by the eras of industrialization and the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
