Berlin-Friedrichshain Up Close: The Ultimate Neighborhood Walking Tour

Welcome to Berlin-Friedrichshain!
This guided walking tour takes you away from the sterile tourist hubs and deep into the beating heart of East Berlin's alternative scene.

We will discover hidden corners, laugh
at local oddities, and dive into world
history at the longest remaining stretch
of the Berlin Wall. Pack your most
comfortable shoes and let’s dive in!

Station 1: The RAW Area – Where Subculture Takes the Lead

Our adventure begins at the RAW-Gelände where heavy bass now thumps and colorful graffiti covers every surface, steam locomotives were serviced starting in 1867. After its closure in the 1990s, the unique Berlin magic happened: artists, cultural visionaries, and DJs reclaimed the old brick halls, transforming the grey industrial wasteland into a thriving sanctuary for subculture.

Station 2: The Neighborhood Promenade and the Secret of Boxhagener Platz

Leaving the industrial energy of the RAW area behind, we cross Revaler Straße and step onto Krossener Straße. This street serves as our scenic promenade, leading us deeper into the Boxhagener neighborhood. Here, the raw industrial grit instantly gives way to beautiful, late-19th-century apartment buildings (Altbauten).

After a few minutes of walking, we reach the undisputed social heart of the neighborhood: Boxhagener Platz, affectionately called "Boxi" by everyone who lives here. Boxi is a green urban oasis with plenty of character.

Station 3: The Most Colorful House and the Iconic Oberbaumbrücke

From Boxi, we head south toward the banks of the Spree River. Walking through the surrounding streets like Rigaer Straße, we encounter the footprints of Berlin's legendary squatter movement.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, hundreds of apartments in East Berlin were left completely vacant. Punks, activists, and students moved into these empty buildings, setting up self-managed communal living spaces to protest rising rents and corporate development.

Station 5: The East Side Gallery – Where Art Brought Down the Wall

The longest remaining continuous piece of the actual Berlin Wall. Until November 1989, this concrete barrier was a deadly instrument of division.

But in the spring of 1990, 118 artists from 21 countries arrived to use the blank Eastern side of the wall as a massive canvas. They transformed the grey symbol of oppression into a monumental monument for peace, human rights, and freedom. Walking along the historic concrete structure, the colorful artwork unfolds beside you. Each painting tells a deeply personal story of hope, political resistance, and the joy of reunification.

The Wrap-Up

Our walk comes to a close right here along the banks of the Spree.

Together, we have experienced the creative chaos of the RAW grounds, enjoyed the village-like idyll of Boxi, marvelled at the fairytale towers of the Oberbaumbrücke, and
breathed in world history along the Wall.
