It all started with soot.
Two hundred years ago, the wood-burning stoves of rural Polish cottages left dark stains on the walls. The women of Zalipie began covering them with whitewash — and then, almost by accident, started adding colour. Using handmade brushes crafted from their own hair, they painted simple floral patterns. What began as a practical solution became a living art form, passed down from mother to daughter for generations.
Today, Zalipie is unlike anywhere else in Europe. Homes, barns, fences, wells, and even chicken coops are covered in vivid floral motifs — and every year, the village holds a competition for the most beautifully painted cottage. Not every house takes part — this is still an ordinary Polish village where people live their own lives — but those who paint do so with extraordinary pride and creativity.
This is a fully private tour — just you and your guide, no shared group, no fixed pace. We’ll pick you up from your Krakow accommodation and take you on a scenic drive through the Polish countryside before arriving in Zalipie for an unhurried, immersive experience.
Your private tour includes:
