Architecture and houses
The houses of the Zaanse Schans are characterized by their dark green color (the so-called Zaans groen), their stepped roofs, and their wooden construction. Many of these houses were moved from other parts of the Zaan region
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Zaan region was one of the world's first industrial centers. Thousands of windmills powered industries such as wood sawing, spice grinding, oil making, and paper processing. With the arrival of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, many mills fell into disuse and were demolished.
In the late 20th century, a decision was made to preserve and bring together authentic historic houses, workshops, and windmills in one place, creating what is now known as Zaanse Schans.
