Salt: The White Gold That Built Empires
Salt’s story spans millions of years, shaping landscapes, cultures, and economies. About 250 million years ago, a massive salt lake covered the region we now call Austria and Germany. As the water evaporated, thick salt deposits remained, later pushed up into the Alps by powerful tectonic forces — a process that continues to this day.
Humans quickly discovered salt’s value. By 4,000 BC, people were preserving food with it. The Celts in Dürrnberg began mining salt around the 6th century BC, creating a thriving community. By the Middle Ages, Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops recognized salt as a key source of wealth, funding the city’s stunning architecture. Today, you can walk through this incredible history at Salzwelten Salzburg — home to the world’s oldest accessible salt mine.
