Český Krumlov, located in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, developed around a castle built in the 13th century above the Vltava River by the powerful Lords of Krumlov. The town became a significant seat of the Rosenberg family in the 14th and 15th centuries, a period during which it grew in wealth and cultural importance. Under the rule of the Eggenbergs and later the Schwarzenbergs, the town acquired many of its Renaissance and Baroque buildings that still stand today. Its architecture and urban layout remained largely intact through centuries of political changes, including the Habsburg Monarchy and Czechoslovakia, contributing to its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
The guided walking tour leads through Český Krumlov’s preserved old town, passing medieval houses, narrow alleys, and the central square. At its center stands the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic, featuring Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, as well as a preserved Baroque theatre. Visitors also learn about the town’s development during periods of noble patronage and its adaptation through the 20th century. The tour highlights the historical continuity of the town’s structures and streetscapes, offering insight into how centuries of regional and dynastic shifts shaped its form and function.
