After the Ottomans captured Lesendro in 1843, Njegoš made several unsuccessful attempts to reclaim it, inspiring the famous Montenegrin saying, "He longs for it like the Bishop longs for Lesendro," a phrase still used today to describe someone who deeply desires something that remains out of reach.
