Travel to the summit of Costa Rica’s highest volcano, explore its impressive crater landscape, and take in high-altitude views before continuing to the historic city of Cartago.
Depart from San José and follow the South Pan-American Highway toward Irazú Volcano National Park. As you climb into the Central Volcanic Range, the scenery changes from the city to fertile highland farmland, where vegetables and other crops are grown along the mountain slopes.
At Irazú Volcano National Park, head to the Craters sector to explore the volcanic landscape which is located at approximately 3,432 m (11,260 ft) above sea level, so temperatures can be significantly cooler than in San José, averaging around 5–9°C (41–48°F). Weather can change quickly, and cloud or fog may limit visibility. We recommend wearing warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable closed toe shoes. Here, you can see the main viewing areas and observe the volcano’s craters and surrounding highlands. The appearance of the crater landscape can vary with weather and volcanic conditions, and views may be limited by cloud or fog. On clear days, you may see across much of Costa Rica and toward the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.
After your volcano visit, descend to Cartago, one of Costa Rica’s historic cities. Stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, an important religious and architectural landmark, before returning to San José.
This experience combines dramatic volcanic scenery, mountain landscapes, and a glimpse into Costa Rica’s history in a convenient day trip from the capital.
