Big Ice is an unforgettable, physically demanding experience that combines adventure, nature, and exploration in the heart of the Perito Moreno Glacier. The excursion begins in El Calafate, from where passengers are transported in comfortable buses to Los Glaciares National Park. During the trip, tour guides provide information about the glacier, its surroundings, and the activity.
The adventure begins at the “Bajo de las Sombras” cruise port, located 70 km from El Calafate. There, visitors board a boat to cross Lake Rico, sailing for 20 minutes in front of the majestic southern wall of the glacier. Upon arrival at the shelter, expert mountain guides welcome the group, divide it into subgroups, and equip them with crampons, helmets, and harnesses, as well as explain the necessary safety regulations.
The tour begins with a hike through the moraine and forest that lasts approximately two hours. This section allows you to enjoy panoramic views of the glacier while preparing for the ascent onto the ice. Once equipped and on the glacier, visitors witness a unique landscape: blue lagoons, deep cracks, huge drains, and, if we're lucky, we'll be able to see fascinating caves that give a completely new perspective on the natural world.
The ice trek, which lasts approximately three hours, allows passengers to explore the glacier in detail and better understand its immensity and uniqueness. The mountain guides share information about the formation and dynamics of the glacier, while visitors enjoy the surrounding views, including the Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes hills. There's also a 30-minute break for lunch in a setting of incredible beauty.
The hike ends with the drop-off at the refuge along the same path, allowing for one last moment to take in the majesty of the landscape. Afterwards, participants board the boat again for a cruise close to the southern wall of the glacier before returning to civilization.
The excursion includes a one-hour guided visit to the boardwalks of the Perito Moreno Glacier, located 7 km from the cruise port, where it is possible to enjoy panoramic views and walk along self-guided trails. In total, the experience lasts approximately 12 hours if the offered transportation is used, or 7.5 hours if passengers travel to Bajo de las Sombras Port on their own from El Calafate.
The Big Ice takes place in a dynamic natural environment, where the weather conditions and the characteristics of the glacier are constantly changing.
