Sugar cane has been the common thread running through the history of the estate for two centuries. Set out on a journey to discover its history, its remains, and its inhabitants of yesterday and today. Departure on Wednesday at 9:30AM.
Immerse yourself in the little-known history of the Domaine de Bel Air through a landscaped and meditative route in tribute to the freed and contracted workers from Africa, India, Madagascar, and elsewhere.
With the financial support of the Regional Council of Reunion and the Fondation du Patrimoine, the remains of the Bel Air Chapel and its green surroundings have been landscaped to pay tribute to the freedmen and indentured servants who made the Domaine prosper from 1850 to 1878, as well as to the extraordinary figure of Camille Jurien de la Gravière, the unusual owner of Bel-Air during this period.
Continue the tour to discover the Payet & Rivière artisanal sugar refinery and distillery and taste the traditional Bonbon Galabé and the very first estate rums of Réunion.
This "History" tour is suitable for ages 12 and up.
