How is it that a city of just over 100,000 people in southern Estonia is known as the cultural capital, the intellectual capital, and the street art capital of the country?
On my tour, we’ll explore different historical periods, Estonian culture and food, and modern life—seeing, tasting, and experiencing Tartu along the way. You’ll learn how Tartu developed from its origins into a major trade hub up to the 20th century, how it played a key role as the center of the Estonian National Awakening in the 19th century, and how the small Swedish Academia Gustaviana, founded in 1632 with just six students, grew into the University of Tartu—now ranked among the top 300 universities worldwide, with over 20,000 students.
You’ll discover what life was like for students and locals in the past, and we’ll also explore modern life, traditions, and street art while trying some local snacks and drinks.
By the end of the tour, you’ll understand how Estonia came to be against all odds—and why Estonians stand by the saying: “The situation is shit, but it is fertilizer for our future.”
About me: I’ve been living in Estonia for 8 years. I’m healthily obsessed with Tartu and love Estonia (even Tallinn… on a good summer day). I prefer small groups to create a more personal and connected experience. Tartu is home to over 10 museums, several classic and modern theatres, as well as the Estonian National Museum, the National Archives, the Supreme Court, and much more—just ask!
