Continue to the magnificent Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain), one of the country's most significant archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the existing fort was constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century, archaeological excavations have uncovered six earlier civilizations beneath it, dating back to the ancient Dilmun civilization around 3000 BC, when the site is believed to have served as the island's capital.
