Begin your day with a convenient hotel pickup in Datong. Travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned minibus to the Hanging Temple, perched on the steep cliff of Heng Mountain for over 1,500 years. With more than 40 pavilions suspended 50 meters above the ground, the entire temple is fixed by hidden deep-lying beams instead of iron nails, forming a breathtaking "air castle" on the cliff.
Learn about the brilliant ancient mechanical wisdom of the temple. Though supported by several thin wooden pillars visually, the deep embedded rock beams bear the main weight. The ingenious virtual-real combination design has helped the temple survive thousands of years of storms and earthquakes.
Discover its unique three-religion integration — this rare temple enshrines Sakyamuni (Buddhism), Laozi (Taoism), and Confucius (Confucianism) in one hall, fully reflecting the inclusive and diverse culture of the Wei and Jin Dynasties.
Note: We will admire the temple exterior and ground-level halls only; tickets for climbing the Hanging Temple are not included in this tour.
After visiting the Hanging Temple, we will stop for a hearty authentic Datong lunch with a set fixed menu, lasting around 1 hour.
After lunch, continue to the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back over 1,500 years to the Northern Wei Dynasty. Stretching one kilometer along the cliff, the site holds 252 caves and more than 51,000 Buddha statues.
Admire the No. 20 Open-Air Giant Buddha, the iconic symbol of Yungang Grottoes. Standing 13.75 meters high, it inherits the Gandhara artistic style of ancient India and Central Asia, featuring profound facial features and a majestic bearing.
We will then explore the Ten Major Tan Yao Caves, the core royal caves of the Northern Wei Dynasty. The giant standing Buddhas are modeled after ancient emperors, showcasing the grand evolution of Buddhist art from foreign styles to localized Chinese aesthetics.
