Samaria Gorge Hike from Mountains to Sea from Heraklion｜Greece

Set out early from Heraklion or Hersonissos and travel into the White Mountains toward the Omalos Plateau, where the Samaria Gorge begins.

From Xyloskalo, follow the descending path into one of Crete’s most well-known natural landscapes. The route unfolds gradually—pine forest, rocky terrain, and narrow passages—shaped over time by the flow of water through the canyon.

As you continue, the scale of the gorge becomes more defined. The cliffs rise higher, the path narrows, and the landscape shifts with each section of the trail. At the Iron Gates, the gorge reaches its most dramatic point, with steep rock walls closing in on both sides.

The hike continues south toward the Libyan Sea, ending at the village of Agia Roumeli. Here, the change in scenery is immediate—mountains give way to open coastline. You will have time to rest, swim, or stop for lunch by the sea.

In the afternoon, board the boat from Agia Roumeli to Hora Sfakia. On arrival, your private driver will meet you for the return journey to Heraklion or Hersonissos.
