Argolis is one of the most archaeologically-rich regions in Greece. In this tour we will explore ancient ruins of mysterious civilizations that thrived thousands of years ago.
1. Argos castle
We start in Argos, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. This can be seen in the city's Byzantine fortress which displays layers of multiple cultures built over time. The most fascinating ruins are the mycenaean and ancient foundations of the castle, as well as the reconstructed mycenaean gate.
2. Pyramid of Elliniko
Europe's only ancient pyramid is a monument whose shape is enough to spark conspiracy theories and national pride follows faithfully, mandating that it is older than the pyramids of Egypt, but is it true or is it nonsense?
3. Mythical Lerna
At the shores of the Argolic Gulf is the site of Hercules' second labor where he fought the mythical beast Lernean Hydra, featuring the water source and the mythical Alkyonia Lake. Unexpectedly at the river mouth is located a Second World War military facility.
4. The tholos tomb of Tiryns
Standing remarkably intact for 3.200 years this tomb is one of the few of its kind in Greece. It is believed it belonged to the mythical king of Tiryns Proitos who is immortalized in Homer's Iliad.
5. Kazarma Mycenaean Bridge
For the end I have the oldest functional bridge in Europe — and potentially the world — an ancient mycenaean stone structure that remains untouched by time, part of the historical route connecting Mycenae to Epidaurus.
