Discover Charlottesville’s fascinating past and vibrant present with your choice of two independent guided walking tours. Each tour offers a unique perspective on the city’s history, culture, and community. Whether you’re drawn to the lively Downtown Mall, the historic heart of Court Square, or the rich stories of Maplewood Cemetery, you’ll find an experience that matches your curiosity.
On the Downtown Mall Walking Tour, stroll along one of America’s longest pedestrian malls. Your guide will share how Main Street evolved from a 19th-century commercial hub into a lively destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Hear about three influential Presidents with ties to the region and discover how their legacies shaped Charlottesville’s growth. Learn about the transformation of local businesses before and after the Civil War, and finish in the heart of the mall, ready to explore more on your own.
The Court Square History Walking Tour begins at the Albemarle County Circuit Courthouse. Follow your guide through the city’s civic center, tracing the area’s journey from the Monacan Nation to modern times, including the recent removal of four controversial monuments. Walk among preserved buildings and learn how Court Square influenced the development of downtown, with each stop connecting to key moments in the region’s timeline. The tour ends at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society.
The Maplewood Cemetery Walking Tour begins at the entrance to the cemetery. Stride through Maplewood Cemetery, the city’s oldest public burying ground, and discover the stories of the people who shaped Charlottesville and Albemarle County. From prominent figures to everyday residents, explore the lives, histories, and sometimes surprising legends found among Maplewood’s graves. This guided walking tour offers a unique look at local history through both the people who lived it and the cemetery that remembers them.
Each tour runs independently, allowing you to select the story you want to follow. All tours are led by knowledgeable guides and finish in central locations, perfect for further discovery of Charlottesville’s downtown.
