Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town situated in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, buried under a torrent of mud and volcanic material after the eruption in 79 AD. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk along the streets almost exactly as the Romans did over 2,000 years ago. Original wooden structures and clay pots can still be seen, preserved as they were at the time of the eruption. Together with your guide, you will visit many of the most important sites, such as the public baths with their well-preserved frescoes and mosaics, ancient shops, and the gymnasium.
