Travel north to the rugged shores of Lake Winnipeg—the world’s 11th largest freshwater lake—to explore the undeveloped wilderness of Elk Island Provincial Park.
This guided day-trip begins with an unhurried drive featuring local commentary on the area's history and geography, stopping at a coffee shop along the way. Upon arrival at destination, the hike begins with a unique shallow water crossing and a walk along a sweeping sandspit—frequently teeming with various species of shorebirds and waterfowl—before entering the island's boreal interior.
You will hike through quiet forested trails that suddenly open up to a dramatic northern shore where massive sand cliffs and open water create a sense of total isolation. After completing the island circuit, the adventure returns to the mainland. Cap off the day with a well-earned meal at a local restaurant, before enjoying a relaxing drive back.
While the terrain is virtually flat with almost no elevation, the full 18 km loop is a solid effort and a long day on your feet (especially on the sand!). No fear, though—we take our time, take plenty of breaks, and move strictly at your pace. Because this is a private tour, we can also adapt the route for shorter distances and tailor the day entirely to your group's comfort level.
