Sixty minutes from Santiago, the Cajón del Maipo offers something
no other destination in Chile can match: high-altitude Andean
adventure, world-class Chilean wines, and professional stargazing
under some of the darkest skies in South America — all in two
days, fully handled from your hotel door.
Most visitors to Santiago never leave the city. A few make it to
the mountains. Almost none do both — and do them well. Valle
Profundo is built around that gap.
DAY 1 — INTO THE ANDES
The experience begins at your hotel at 08:00. Sixty minutes later,
the city disappears and the Andes take over.
Your first stop is El Yeso Reservoir — one of the most
breathtaking Andean landscapes in the Metropolitan Region, sitting
at over 2,400 meters above sea level. A certified guide introduces
the geological history of the valley: the volcanic forces, the
glacial meltwater, the slow patience of the cordillera. It is the
kind of place that makes you recalibrate your sense of scale.
From there, you head to Hostería Millahue — a boutique mountain
lodge set deep in the Cajón, where the afternoon shifts into
motion. Depending on the season, your activity is rafting on the
Maipo River, a guided trek through the valley, or rock climbing
on the cordillera walls. All equipment is provided. All guides
are certified. No prior experience required.
By evening, the adventure gives way to something quieter. A
certified sommelier guides you through three Chilean wines chosen
not for their fame, but for their geological affinity with the
valley you have spent the day exploring — the same thermal range,
the same Andean influence, the same story in the soil. Every
glass connects directly to the landscape outside the window.
Then the sky opens. Under Bortle 3–4 conditions — far from any
city light pollution — a professional astronomer turns telescopes
toward the Southern Hemisphere's deep sky. Nebulae, globular
clusters, the Magellanic Clouds. The Milky Way is not a backdrop
here. It is the ceiling.
DAY 2 — THE RETURN
No alarm. The morning begins slowly: a full mountain breakfast,
and optional nature yoga on the lodge grounds before the valley
wakes up completely.
The return to Santiago departs at approximately 14:00, arriving
back at your hotel by 16:00.
