This magical place was formed by tectonic movements and volcanic activity millions of years ago. It lies where the Domeyko mountain range, the Salt mountain range, and the Andes meet. The valley owes its name to the variety of tones visible in its hills, which reflect rich and varied concentrations of clays, salts, and minerals. The rocks have been strongly weathered by the area's environmental and climatic conditions. This expedition also visits the Yerbas Buenas petroglyphs, an important rock art site where the Atacameño people left traces of their culture. The site is also of great geological interest.
