Enjoy a unique horseback riding experience in Rapa Nui, exploring volcanic landscapes, archaeological sites, and natural environments of great cultural value. This intermediate-level horseback ride offers two route options, both accompanied by a licensed local guide and with all the necessary equipment for a safe and authentic experience.
The first option is the Horseback Ride to the Maunga Terevaka Volcano, the highest point on the island at 530 meters above sea level. After the transport by vehicle to the Vaitea ranch, the horseback ride begins, ascending towards the summit. From the top, you'll get 360° panoramic views that let you appreciate the island's three vertices and its immensity in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. During the route, you can also see the Rano Aroi volcano and its lagoon, surrounded by native flora. The descent continues towards the Ahu Akivi area, where the group is picked up to return to Hanga Roa.
The second option is the Cave Horseback Ride, a fascinating route not suitable for people with claustrophobia. On this tour, you'll visit three important volcanic caverns: Ana Kakenga, Ana Te Pora and Ana Te Pahu. These caves are part of an extensive system of underground lava tubes. Ana Kakenga is notable for its two tunnels leading to a cliff overlooking the sea; Ana Te Pora for its large interior space; and Ana Te Pahu for its size and historical relevance, as it was used as a refuge by the Rapa Nui people during the era of slavery. Inside, you can see vestiges of ancient kitchens, crops, and petroglyphs. The tour ends with a return to the starting stable and subsequent transport to the hotel.
Both routes last approximately 3 hours, operate all year round, and have morning or afternoon departure times, subject to reconfirmation. They include transport to and from downtown hotels, one horse per person, full equipment, and flashlights for the cave tour. They do not include a National Park ticket or food.
