What if the path itself became the destination? Embark on a 4-day private trekking adventure through the Cerro Castillo Las Horquetas Circuit, one of the most spectacular multi-day routes in Chilean Patagonia.
Over four days, cross native lenga forests, rivers, valleys, moraines, mountain passes, and remote camps surrounded by views of the Cerro Castillo massif, hanging glaciers, and turquoise glacial lagoons. As a private experience, the pace and daily timing can be adapted to the group while preserving the overall trekking route.
Day 1 – Las Horquetas → Río Turbio Camp
Approx. 15.4 km | 5–6 hours
Begin at the Las Horquetas trailhead and follow a gradual route through lenga forest, open valleys, streams, and the Río Turbio sector. This first day offers a gentler introduction to the circuit and allows the group to settle into the rhythm of the expedition.
Overnight: Camping at Río Turbio.
Day 2 – Río Turbio → El Bosque Camp
Approx. 9.8 km | 5–7 hours
Leave Río Turbio and ascend toward Portezuelo El Peñón, one of the major mountain passes of the route. Enjoy increasingly dramatic views of the Río Turbio valley and the surrounding high-mountain landscape before descending through mountain terrain and native forest to El Bosque Camp.
Overnight: Camping at El Bosque.
Day 3 – El Bosque → Laguna Cerro Castillo → Porteadores
Approx. 9 km | 7–8 hours
Trek through one of the most scenic and demanding sections of the circuit toward Laguna Cerro Castillo, surrounded by glaciers, steep rock walls, and the dramatic peaks of the massif. After time to enjoy the lagoon and viewpoints, continue across high terrain and descend toward Porteadores Camp.
Overnight: Camping at Porteadores.
Day 4 – Porteadores → Optional Laguna Duff → Estero Parada
The final day can be adapted to the group’s energy level. If conditions and energy allow, add an optional out-and-back trek to Laguna Duff, a remote glacial lagoon surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. This extension takes approximately 4 hours round trip and is completed with only a light daypack, without carrying the full expedition load.
After returning from Laguna Duff, descend toward Estero Parada in approximately 2–3 hours. If the group prefers a shorter final day, the Laguna Duff extension can be skipped and the group can descend directly to the exit.
The expedition finishes at Estero Parada, where return transportation connects with the group.
Pick-up is included in Villa Cerro Castillo. Travelers staying in Coyhaique should arrange transportation to Villa Cerro Castillo before the expedition. Regional bus services connect both locations, with schedules varying by day and season.
This is a remote multi-day camping expedition. Participants should be prepared for long trekking days, changing weather, uneven terrain, and river crossings. Minor adjustments to timing, pace, and daily logistics may be necessary depending on weather, trail conditions, and the group’s progress.
