Explore Leiden on a shared or private tour with an art historian and discover how this resilient trading town grew into the intellectual heart of the Dutch Republic and one of the leading textile centres.
Leiden offers all the breathtaking beauty of historic canals and Golden Age architecture, yet never overwhelms you. Its compact historic centre makes it possible to experience centuries of history with every landmark only a short walk away.
Our journey begins near the Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. In the shadow of the monumental Pieterskerk we’ll uncover a fascinating chapter connecting Leiden directly to the New World and the origin of American Thanksgiving. On request, the tour can also include a guided visit inside the church, where you'll hear fascinating stories from the age of the Reformation. We’ll then stroll down the bustling Breestraat to admire the Renaissance City Hall and elegant Art Nouveau facades. After crossing the local market with its many landmarks, we’ll climb the Burcht—a medieval hilltop fortress—offering stunning views over Leiden’s rooftops and the imposing Hooglandse Kerk. The walk will also take you to Leiden's iconic windmills and places that shaped Rembrandt's early life.
Along the way, you'll discover: - The surprising connection between Leiden and American history - How a humble Dutch town sparked the infamous nationwide "Tulip Mania" - The secrets hidden behind the facade of the City Hall - How to read the language of a Dutch windmill
Expect insightful but lighthearted storytelling, rich context and practical advice to help you navigate the rest of your Dutch adventure!
