Man-made caves were discovered on a farm called Ægissíða, near the town Hella on the South coast of Iceland. The Caves of Hella offer daily guided tours of five of these caves on a one hour tour led by a local Icelandic guide.
During the tour, you will hear fascinating stories about the caves and the mysteries surrounding them, as their origins remain unknown. Believed to be Iceland's oldest still-standing archaeological site, the caves feature wall carvings, ancient structures, and an atmosphere filled with intrigue.
The questions yet to be answered include: · Are the caves the handiwork of the Celts? · Were the caves a place of ancient worship? · When were they made, and for what purpose?
Join us to uncover the secrets hidden within the caves and experience the magical Underworld of the South.
The caves are located by the town of Hella, right next to Route 1 (the Ring Road), approximately a one-hour drive from Reykjavík. Free parking is available in a large parking lot shared with the American School Bus Café. Add this unique stop to your South Coast road trip!
