Discover the striking beauty of Stuðlagil Canyon on a guided shore excursion through East Iceland. Visit Rjúkandi Waterfall and hike to the canyon’s impressive basalt columns, with time to enjoy the views and take photographs along the way.
Start your day with pickup from Seyðisfjörður or Egilsstaðir. Travel through the countryside into Jökuldalur Valley, stopping at Rjúkandi Waterfall for a short walk and views of the falls.
Continue to Stuðlagil Canyon, where a 2.5 km (1.6-mile) hike along the east side brings you to its dramatic basalt formations. Towering columns line the river, creating one of East Iceland’s most distinctive landscapes. Your local guide will share insights into the area as you explore.
Enjoy the canyon and capture some photographs before walking back to the bus for the return journey to your pickup location.
The hike is approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) in total, following a mostly flat gravel path with some inclines and declines. The river’s colour varies with the season and water conditions, ranging from turquoise to grey.
