商品説明

Meet your local guide, Ian, in Dún Laoghaire and set out on a journey through more than 1,500 years of Irish history, following the remarkable story of how a royal fort overlooking Dublin Bay evolved into one of Ireland's most important harbours.

Your experience begins with the dramatic tale of High King Laoghaire, the powerful ruler whose ancient fort once stood above these shores and gave the town its name. Standing overlooking Dublin Bay, discover why this stretch of coastline was strategically important and hear stories of power, politics, trade and conflict in early Ireland. Learn about Ireland before the arrival of Christianity and the role this coastline played in connecting Ireland with Britain and beyond.

As the walk continues, explore the arrival of St. Patrick and the profound changes that transformed Irish society. Discover how the coastline became a gateway for traders, travellers and invaders, and hear stories of Viking activity in Dublin Bay and the emergence of nearby settlements that would shape the area's future.

Following the scenic coastline, your guide will reveal the hidden stories behind the landscape. Learn how generations of fishermen, merchants, sailors and local families lived and worked along these shores. Hear tales of shipwrecks, maritime trade, smuggling, storms and survival while enjoying spectacular views across Dublin Bay towards Howth Head and the Irish Sea.

Continuing towards historic Dalkey, discover how this small coastal settlement became one of medieval Ireland's most important ports. Hear stories of merchants, castles, trade routes and the wealth that flowed through the town during the Middle Ages. Along the way, explore the area's literary connections and discover why writers such as James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Maeve Binchy found inspiration in these coastal communities.

The tour then follows the extraordinary transformation of the area during the nineteenth century. Learn how the construction of Dún Laoghaire Harbour, one of the great engineering achievements of Victorian Ireland, changed the fortunes of the town forever. Hear stories of harbour builders, railway pioneers, royalty and visitors who helped transform the small fishing settlement into the fashionable seaside resort of Kingstown.

As you explore the harbour and surrounding streets, discover the social history of Victorian life, from grand hotels and elegant promenades to the lives of workers who built and maintained the harbour. Learn how steamships, railways and tourism reshaped the town and connected it to the wider world.

The story continues into the twentieth century, covering revolution, independence and the eventual return of the town's historic name, Dún Laoghaire. Along the way, Ian will share local insights, myths, legends and lesser-known stories that bring the town's history to life.

Throughout the experience, there will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs, ask questions and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery.
