Every year, from mid-September to mid-October, the mountains of the Mercantour echo with an impressive sound: the roar of the stag. This period coincides with the rut, during which male deer make their powerful calls heard in the valleys and mountain forests.
Join your guide for a hiking tour dedicated to listening to and observing this exceptional natural phenomenon. The outings are organized in different areas of the Mercantour, sometimes at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, in the heart of unspoiled landscapes offering magnificent panoramas of the Southern Alps.
The best times to hear and potentially observe the animals are generally very early in the morning or at the end of the day, when the mountains return to calm and the deer become more active. Departure times are therefore adjusted to maximize the chances of fully experiencing the roar.
Before the tours, your guide regularly goes on scouting hikes to identify the areas where deer activity is most significant. The route can therefore change over the course of the season depending on the observations made, the weather conditions and the animals' activity.
You don’t need to be an experienced hiker to take part. The guide adapts the distance, elevation gain, and walking pace to the level and abilities of the participants. The main goal is to take the time to listen, observe, and discover the mountain.
As with any observation of wild animals living freely in their natural environment, their presence can never be guaranteed. Therefore, visually observing a deer remains an additional opportunity. On the other hand, during the rutting season, hearing the roar is generally very likely in the areas selected by the guide, and the results obtained are usually excellent.
And even when the animals decide to remain discreet, the outing retains all its appeal: high-altitude landscapes, forests, morning or sunset light, and the wild atmosphere of the Mercantour make this hiking tour an experience in its own right.
The meeting point is in the Mercantour National Park, usually about 1 to 1.5 hours' drive from Nice. The exact location, time, and practical information will be provided by your guide before the outing, depending on the conditions and the area selected.
For participants who do not have a vehicle or who want a fully inclusive package, an option with private transportation by 4x4 from Nice is also available.
All our outings are private, to ensure the tranquility of the sites and the best possible observation results.
