Meet your guide at St Paul’s Churchyard by exit 2 of St Paul's Tube Station - next to the Cafe Nero. You will hear the story of two cutpurses who fell into an argument that ended with Geoffrey stabbing John Milward. Geoffrey sprinted into the maze of lanes around St Paul’s, aiming for sanctuary — though the record doesn’t say if he ever reached it.
Continue to Cheapside at Bread Street and hear the story of the priest John Ford who tried to end a long-standing quarrel with Lady Ella FitzPayn. But Ella wanted blood: she set her brother Hugh Lovell and two hired men to kill him. They ambushed Ford in the street — calling him over with friendly chatter — before stabbing him in the throat and belly. The murderers ran straight toward potential sanctuary sites, vanishing into the city’s networks of churches.
Next, head to the site of the Great Cheapside Cross and hear about the guild feud between the Goldsmiths and Saddlers. Cheapside after curfew was dangerous. Here, twelve Goldsmiths set out to ambush Saddlers after a simmering guild dispute. They found John atte Vyse, a Saddler, near the Cross. A sword blow seven inches long split his skull; others cut him with an axe. As he collapsed, the gang scattered, some making for sanctuary routes toward Milk Street or St Martin’s.
Head south into Bow Lane toward St Mary-le-Bow and hear the story of Roger Stylewood who spilled a load of eels. Apprentices mocked him; tempers rose. Dragged into the churchyard of St Mary-le-Bow, Roger was struck and died. Two assailants immediately fled into the church itself, seeking the protection of holy ground. One refused to surrender — boldly gambling on the protection of the Virgin’s own sanctuary bells.
Next, head north toward Gresham Street and Bassishaw and hear the story of John of Bakewell who stabbed Thomas of Malmesbury with a dagger inside the chapel — a killing both brazen and sacrilegious. John vanished completely: no goods to forfeit, no trace of him. Not until five years later, in 1320, was he finally found. His long disappearance suggests he too slipped into sanctuary or monastic protection, or fled under clerical escort.
Finally, head south via Wood Street to the Watling Street area and hear the story of Michael Cardoyl who exchanged sharp words with two brothers, John and Robert de Elmenham. Robert stabbed him with a long knife. What happened next is a perfect illustration of medieval sanctuary: Robert ran to the sanctuary of St Mary Magdalene, Milk Street, refusing to come out. John slipped away to All Hallows, another sanctuary house. Both outwaited the law; Robert even received a royal pardon.
