Depart from Liverpool and head to Chester, a city known for its Roman walls and medieval architecture. Walk along the ancient walls, stopping at the Jubilee Clock for photos. Admire the half-timbered buildings and the unique two-tier shopping rows.
Visit a 16th-century cafe on the walls, where you can enjoy homemade cakes, pies, and ice cream. In the summer, arrive in time to hear the town crier. Explore the new market area for lunch or enjoy a Sunday roast.
Visit the cathedral to see the canistery court, the oldest parts of the cathedral recycling Roman remains, and the Lego model. Walk around the UK’s most complete set of walls, usually covering half and walking back across the center to walk alongside Chester Racecourse.
See the Roman remains, the amphitheater, and the C15 Dee Bridge. Pass by a pub on Bridge Street where John Lennon’s great-grandmother was born. Tailor the walk according to the group and the weather.
On the way back to Liverpool, stop in Port Sunlight, a showcase Victorian industrial village built for the Sunlight Soap workers. Learn about the village’s history, including its dark side of using palm oil from the Belgian Congo with enslaved labor until the 1960s.
Visit Hulme Hall, where Ringo Starr made his Beatles debut, and the Lady Lever Art Gallery, which houses Hesketh Lever’s private collection. See the graves of Lady Lever and enjoy the village’s architecture, including the former houses of the lamplighters and the old fire station.
Pass by the Beatles’ houses of John and Paul and Penny Lane on the way back to the ship.
