Step into the creative world of ancient Ireland with an Ogham Greeting Card Making Workshop on the scenic Ards Peninsula. This hands-on experience invites you to explore the history of the Ogham alphabet, an early Irish writing system carved into stone since the 5th century. Guided by an expert, you’ll learn how to translate your own words or sentiments into Ogham, connecting with a piece of Gaelic history as you craft.
Begin with an introduction to the Ogham script and its fascinating origins. See examples of the alphabet and learn how to form letters and words using its distinctive notches and lines. Next, be shown the basics of relief printing, including how to safely carve your design into lino plates. With your personal Ogham message ready, apply ink and use a traditional printing press to create your own set of greeting cards, experimenting with both card and fabric materials.
Throughout the session, enjoy a relaxed and welcoming studio atmosphere, complete with tea or coffee and a slice of cake. All materials are provided, and your instructor will be on hand to offer guidance and answer questions. At the end of the workshop, package your finished cards to take home, a personal memento and a unique way to share Irish heritage with friends and family.
