Wiesbaden was Germany's "special" boomtown in the 19th century. The up-and-coming world-class spa town attracted people from near and far: locals and newcomers, guests and people passing through. Many of them eventually found their final resting place in the North Cemetery, which opened in 1877.
On this special walking tour, you will not only discover one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Germany, with its unique woodland character. Above all, you will encounter figures whose lives and work were closely linked to the major developments and defining issues of the "long" 19th century. Their biographies tell of new beginnings and change, of industrialization and social advancement, of war and peace, of the Empire and the middle class, of new ideas, hopes and conflicts. By remembering these people and following in their footsteps, we are, in a sense, bringing them back to life. Their fates help us to understand the past not only as a sequence of historical events, but also as the story of individuals who experienced, influenced and helped shape their time. The Nordfriedhof thus becomes an unusual open-air history book. The graves not only tell of the lives of individual people, but also provide access to a time when society, politics and ways of life in Germany and Europe were undergoing fundamental change.
This guided tour combines the past, personalities and the special location of the Nordfriedhof to create a journey of discovery through the "long" 19th century. Come along and discover history in a place where you can still read the names of the people who helped shape it.
