Mainz can look back on a Roman past spanning nearly 500 years. Under the name Mogontiacum, the city evolved from a legionary camp into a major Roman metropolis. This themed city tour takes you on a journey back to that era, bringing the city's Roman heritage to life in the present-day cityscape.
The tour begins at the remains of the Roman theater, which was once considered the largest stage theater north of the Alps. The tour then continues to the monumental tomb of Drusus, the stepson of Emperor Augustus. The tour concludes at the late-antique Römertor (Roman Gate) on the Kästrich, an impressive remnant of the city's Roman fortifications.
During the tour, you will learn in vivid detail about the role Mainz played as the capital of the province of Upper Germany and about the profound influence the Romans had on the city's development.
The guided tour is part of the 2026 thematic year “Romans in Rhine Hesse,” which is dedicated to the region's Roman heritage.
