Lim Fjord & Rovinj Panorama: Pirate Cave & Scenic Swim Stop｜Croatia

Rovinj and the Lim Fjord are the two things almost every visitor to Istria wants to see, and they sit twenty kilometres apart on a coast road that turns a simple plan into a full day of driving and parking. This trip covers both in three hours, from the water, with no car involved.

We leave Poreč harbour and run south to the mouth of the Lim Fjord — a drowned river valley rather than a true fjord, cutting eleven kilometres inland between limestone walls and protected since 1964. Inside, the water goes still and green, oyster and mussel lines float in the shallows, and the noise of the coast disappears behind you.

Our stop here is the Pirate Cave, the largest of the caves along the bay and one you can only reach by boat. Istrian legend gives it to Henry Morgan, the 17th-century privateer, and you can go ashore and climb up to the entrance. The view down the length of the canal is the reason the story stuck.

Back at open sea we carry on south to Rovinj. The Old Town stood on an island until the 18th century, and the sea approach is the angle it was built for: a solid wall of ochre and faded-pink houses rising straight out of the water, with the Venetian-Baroque bell tower of St. Euphemia standing over them. We slow to a panoramic loop past the waterfront and the wooded islets so you can photograph it properly, then turn north.

Before Poreč we anchor somewhere clear and sheltered for a swim. Cold soft drinks are on board throughout.

There are two departures. The 09:00 gives you flat morning water and direct light on Rovinj's seaward façades. The 17:30 gives you warmer air, an emptier sea and long light along the coast on the way home.

The boat is a Ranieri 23 S with a freshwater shower and an on-board fridge, and it carries a maximum of 8 guests. This is a sightseeing and photography cruise with a swim stop rather than a snorkelling trip — snorkelling equipment is not provided.
