Begin your journey at the Kidike Flying Fox Sanctuary, home to the Pemba flying fox—Africa’s largest fruit bat, with a wingspan reaching up to 1.6 meters. These gentle giants roost in large colonies and play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal, making them keystone species in Pemba’s forest ecology.
From there, the adventure winds into the heart of Ngezi Forest Reserve, a 3,600-acre remnant of indigenous forest teeming with biodiversity. Trek beneath towering mjoho and mgulele trees, encounter playful vervet monkeys and bush babies, and explore sacred sites known as mizimu, where locals sweep the forest floor and offer prayers to ancestral spirits.
The forest also shelters the mystical “Pango ya Watoro,” or Cave of the Fugitives, steeped in local legend and resistance history
