The meeting point is at the entrance of the park, on the Black River side. After a friendly welcome and a briefing with your local live guide, you'll venture into the Black River Gorges, the island's largest natural sanctuary. The trail begins gently, under a canopy of centuries-old ebony trees that filter the light into green shards. Then the adventure gets tougher: rocks to climb over, roots, and several river crossings where the cool water tickles your ankles. Along the way, your live guide brings the forest to life, here the flight of a Mauritius kestrel, once the rarest bird in the world, there an ancient ebony tree or the trail of a flying fox, the island's large fruit bat. Halfway through, the reward: the Mare aux Joncs waterfall reveals itself, its clear water falling into a turquoise pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. It's time to put your bag down, enjoy a complimentary Mauritian coffee and fresh tropical fruit, and then dive into this natural pool that most visitors to Mauritius will never see.
