We set off early in the morning along National Route 3 towards the Punta Tombo Protected Natural Area, located about 180 km from the city of Puerto Madryn. This wildlife reserve is known for being the largest mainland colony of Magellanic penguins in the world, with over 500,000 individuals per breeding season.
The first stop will be to visit its interpretation center, a space that provides information about the flora and fauna that characterize the site, as well as its different environments. Here, you can use the restrooms, walk along its interpretive trails such as "El Domo de los Vientos" (The Dome of the Winds), or enjoy its restaurant with a wide range of services available.
Once at the penguin colony, you'll have the experience of literally walking among penguins, watching them enter and exit the water and head to their nests to care for and feed their chicks, depending on the time of year. (See REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF THE MAGELLANIC PENGUIN). The total route is 3,500 meters, with the option to take breaks on the benches strategically placed for this purpose.
Guanacos, choiques, maras, hares, and various species of birds are often the extra touch that makes these picture-postcard scenes truly unforgettable.
This excursion can optionally be combined with other attractions, such as DOLPHIN WATCHING in the Port of Rawson, a visit to ISLA ESCONDIDA to see southern elephant seals, WELSH TEA IN GAIMAN, or the EGIDIO FERUGLIO MUSEUM in the city of Trelew.
If you are a passenger on one of the cruise ships visiting our city, the tour will only go as far as the penguin colony, with no possible combinations, taking into account the distances and the drop-off time at the ship.
