Begin your day with a pickup from your hotel in downtown Kunming. Drive southeast toward Shilin Yi Autonomous County, taking in the scenic views along the way.
Arrive at the Shilin Stone Forest, a UNESCO Global Geopark. Wander through the surreal karst formations of the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, where towering limestone pillars resemble petrified trees, animals, and mythical figures.
Visit the Naigu Stone Forest (optional, less crowded) or take a short hike to Moon Lake. Learn about Sani Yi ethnic culture as local guides share folklore and traditional songs. Allow 2.5–3 hours for exploration.
Next, enjoy a local Yunnan-style lunch at a restaurant near the Stone Forest entrance. Try dishes like crossing-the-bridge noodles, steamed pot chicken, or wild mushroom stir-fries (seasonal).
After lunch, drive back northwest Kunming Nestled on the serene western shore of Dianchi Lake, just 30 minutes from downtown Kunming, Haiyan Village (Haiyan Cun) is a hidden gem where tradition meets tranquility.
