Info produk

We'll meet on Melidoni Street, at the entrance to the ancient Kerameikos Cemetery—one of the oldest cemeteries in the world and located in the neighborhood where Athens began. No admission. Philosophy doesn't require a ticket.

Full Description

Most tours tell you what happened in Athens. This one asks you what you think about it.

We start at the gates of the Kerameikos, where the ancient city wall still stands and where Pericles once spoke about democracy to an audience that had just lost loved ones. From there, we'll make our way through some of the city's lesser-trodden corners—passing through the Agora, where Socrates annoyed everyone, climbing the Pnyx, where ordinary citizens voted on extraordinary matters, and crossing over to the Areopagus, with the Acropolis towering above us, doing what it does best: lending everything a greater sense of solemnity than it already had.

Your guide studied history and philosophy in England and is completing a master's degree in philosophy and science at the University of Athens, so the questions are genuine, not just for show. The tour is structured like a conversation, not a lecture, which means that you are expected to have opinions. Otherwise, Socrates would have been disappointed.

We cover the usual figures—Socrates, Plato, Aristotle—but also the less obvious ones: the Stoics, who gave us the idea that we can control our reactions even if we can't control events; the Cynics, who believed that owning things was a spiritual problem; and the Epicureans, who have been quite misunderstood ever since. The questions that arise are those for which there are no easy answers: What makes a life worth living? Is democracy still a good idea? What would these people think of the world we have built?

Groups of no more than six people. No paid archaeological sites—philosophy doesn't require a ticket. Your walk ends in Petralona—an authentic Athenian neighborhood without souvenir shops—where the choice between a coffee shop and a tavern table is entirely yours. Private groups welcome. The only philosophy tour in Spanish in all of Athens.
