Transnistria: Hidden Soviet Art & Mosaics｜Moldova

Transnistria remains one of Europe’s least-visited destinations, yet its towns and villages preserve a remarkable collection of Soviet monumental art that has survived largely unchanged since the collapse of the USSR.

Departing from Chisinau, this private full-day tour takes you across Transnistria in search of more than 30 Soviet mosaics and 10 monumental bas-reliefs. The route passes through Bender, Ghisca, Tiraspol, Blizhniy Khutor and Sucleia, visiting residential districts, villages and industrial areas rarely seen by foreign travelers.

Created mainly between the 1960s and 1980s, these artworks once decorated factories, schools, cultural centres, sports facilities, bus stops and public buildings. Their imagery celebrated labour, education, science, technological progress, local traditions and collective life.

In Bender, you will discover monumental reliefs and mosaics hidden across former industrial districts, including the “My Factory Is My Pride” relief, the “Făt-Frumos” mosaic, artworks at the Tkachenko Palace of Culture and a remarkable group of mosaics in the Shelkovik district.

The journey continues through Ghisca, where Soviet art survives at the village entrance and on the grounds of an abandoned technical college. In Tiraspol, you will visit mosaics and reliefs at the Palace of the Republic, city library, local lyceum and several lesser-known locations beyond the usual tourist centre.

The final part of the tour explores the villages of Blizhniy Khutor and Sucleia. Here, monumental mosaics remain on local cultural and sports buildings, including an extraordinary series of eight mosaics at the Sucleia sports school.

Along the way, you will see not only the artworks themselves but also everyday life inside one of Europe’s most unusual and least-understood territories.
