Visiting the Upper Highlands
The peak season for visiting Kamikochi is from mid-April to mid-November each year, with late May to early June being the best time to visit as the trees are just beginning to sprout new green leaves. The beautiful scenery of lush green trees against a backdrop of blue skies and white clouds is truly breathtaking. Moreover, you can avoid the crowds and sweltering heat of the peak tourist season in July and August, allowing you to leisurely enjoy Kamikochi's natural beauty and unique charm. However, even in May and June, the temperature is colder than at sea level, especially with significant temperature differences between day and night, so be sure to pack warm clothing that is easy to put on and take off.
Clothing Guide: Temperatures in the highlands vary greatly depending on the season and location. Therefore, it is recommended to wear stretchy, easy-to-move, and temperature-regulating clothing. Additionally, prepare quick-drying underwear, long-sleeved shirts, and warm clothing. Especially in spring and autumn, when daily temperature differences are significant, it is advisable to bring fleece jackets, mountain parkas, warm scarves, and gloves. Even in summer, temperatures can drop due to weather changes, so even if visiting in summer, pack a windbreaker, as well as shirts and hats for easy changing.
