Begin your journey in Rethymno and head south, passing through the Kourtaliotis Gorge. Admire the high cliffs and narrow roads as you drive through the gorge. Make a short stop to take in the landscape and snap photos of the beautiful mountains.

Later in the morning, visit the Monastery of Preveli, built on a hill at an altitude of 170 meters above the sea. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Libyan Sea and learn about the history of the Cretan resistance and liberation. During World War II, the monastery hosted more than 5,000 allies who helped and fought in the famous Battle of Crete.

Next, stop at the southern village of Plakias. During the 60s, the sandy beach of the village was a destination for hippies, which is not surprising given the magical scenery of the place. Take a refreshing dip in the Libyan Sea before resuming your journey.

After leaving Plakias, travel along the southern coastline until you arrive at the charming town of Lappa, where you'll find remnants of the ancient village as well as landmarks that bear witness to the Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian eras. Below the village, find the famous Springs of Argyroupoli. Surrounded by trees, have your lunch in traditional tavernas.

Finally, as you slowly return north, stop at the Lake of Kournas, the only natural lake of Crete that was created by the melting snow of the White Mountains. Discover the unique ecosystem of this exceptional location before heading back to Rethymno.
