After the Munich Agreement of 1938 and the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, many young soldiers left their homeland to continue the fight abroad. In 1941, Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš were parachuted into occupied Czechoslovakia as part of Operation Anthropoid. Their mission was to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most powerful Nazi officials in Europe, known as the Butcher of Prague and an architect of Nazi terror.

The mission was completed, but the reprisals shocked the world. Lidice and Ležáky were destroyed, hundreds of innocent people were executed, and many who helped the resistance were murdered in Mauthausen concentration camp.

The final chapter took place on 18 June 1942, when Gabčík, Kubiš, and five other Czechoslovak paratroopers were surrounded in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague. They fought for hours and chose death rather than surrender.
