The Kanheri Caves are located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, Mumbai. They are a group of ancient rock-cut caves built between the 1st century BCE and 10th century CE. These caves were used by Buddhist monks as places to live, study, and meditate. There are over 100 caves with prayer halls, stupas, and small rooms called viharas. Many caves have beautiful carvings and inscriptions on the walls. The name “Kanheri” comes from the Sanskrit word “Krishnagiri,” which means “black mountain,” because of the dark stone here. The caves show how Buddhism grew and flourished in India. Today, it’s a popular spot for history lovers and nature travelers.
