Product Info

Mt. Nokogiri is known as a famous low mountain on the Boso Peninsula. Its southern side houses the grounds of 'Nihon-ji Temple,' an imperial prayer temple founded by Emperor Shomu that will celebrate its 1,300th anniversary in 2025.
This plan is a half-day tour to experience the charm of Mt. Nokogiri Nihon-ji Temple, starting from JR Hota Station and climbing Mt. Nokogiri via the main approach and temple gate. Once inside the Nihon-ji Temple grounds, you can enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the Great Buddha (the tallest seated stone Buddha in Japan) and the 1,500 Arhat statues placed along the mountainside. You will climb the stairs toward the summit, pass by the famous 'Jigoku Nozoki' (Hell Lookout) photo spot and the 'Hyakushaku Kannon,' and descend by ropeway.

Can you see the view of Mt. Fuji and Tokyo Bay that was also depicted in Hiroshige's ukiyo-e?
Travel became a boom among commoners during the Edo period. 'Travel' at that time was for faith and prayer, and many travelers and intellectuals from Edo visited Mt. Nokogiri Nihon-ji Temple. Utagawa Hiroshige depicted the view of Tokyo Bay and Mt. Fuji seen on the way from Hota Station to the main approach in his ukiyo-e. If the weather is good, you can still enjoy that same view today.

Understand the world of Buddhism and history thoroughly with a guide's explanation!
The grounds are lined with Buddhist statues along the mountainside, including not only the 1,500 Arhats but also statues of Kobo Daishi, who brought Buddhism to Japan, and Prince Shotoku. With the guide's explanation, you can understand the history and historical background of Buddhism as if you were reading a picture scroll.

Plenty of photo spots!
Mt. Nokogiri has many photo spots such as the famous 'Jigoku Nozoki.' By going with a guide, they will also help you take pictures!
