A safari trip to the Masai Mara can range from approximately $100–$150 per person per day for a budget camping experience to over $500 per person per day for a luxury lodge stay. The final cost is influenced by the season, accommodation type, whether you choose a shared or private tour, and your transportation method. Daily park entry fees, which are around $80 per adult per day during peak season, are often included in package tours, but it's essential to confirm this with your provider. Budget tours may utilize public camping within the reserve or more affordable accommodations in private conservancies, while luxury safaris feature high-end lodges and camps. Shared group tours are generally more economical than private tours. Flying into the Mara is considerably more expensive than traveling by road.

The Masai Mara is considered a very safe destination for visitors. The park is well-protected by professionally trained park rangers and wildlife wardens. It is located a significant distance from the urban areas of Kenya where safety might be a greater concern, offering a secure environment for wildlife viewing.

The best time to visit the Masai Mara for a safari is generally during the dry seasons, from July to October, and again from December to March. These periods offer excellent game viewing opportunities as animals tend to congregate around water sources. The Great Migration, a spectacular event where millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River, typically occurs between July and October, making it a particularly popular time to visit.

The Masai Mara is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and is home to an abundance of wildlife. Visitors can expect to see the 'Big Five': lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos. You'll also encounter large herds of wildebeest and zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, and a vast array of bird species. The park offers unparalleled opportunities for wildlife photography and observation.

For your Masai Mara safari, pack light, neutral-colored clothing that blends with the environment, such as khaki, brown, or green. Essential items include long-sleeved shirts and trousers for sun and insect protection, a warm jacket or fleece for cool evenings and early mornings, comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. Don't forget binoculars for better wildlife viewing, a camera with extra batteries and memory cards, insect repellent, and any personal medications. A small backpack for day trips is also highly recommended.
