Per the 2020 Chinese Census, Tingri County has a population of 58,173, up from the 50,818 recorded in the 2010 Chinese Census. The 2000 Chinese Census recorded a population of 46,585.

Tingri is often understood to mean a Tibetan town situated near Mount Everest. In its entirety, it refers to a county within Shigatse, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Located in southern Tibet, Tingri County is renowned as a key staging point for ascending Mount Everest or Cho Oyu. From here, you can witness panoramic views of four of the world's six highest mountains, including Mount Lhotse, Mount Makalu, in addition to Everest and Cho Oyu.

The trek from Tingri (starting at 4,348m) to Everest Base Camp (5,200m) typically covers approximately 70 km (44 miles) and can be completed in 4–6 days, depending on your pace and chosen itinerary.
