Embark on an immersive journey through the historical and natural landscapes of Epirus, beginning with a visit to the city of Ioannina, located on the western shores of Lake Pamvotis. The city's castle, established before 1020, offers a glimpse into its Byzantine and Ottoman past. Within the castle walls, explore the Aslan Pasha Mosque, the Byzantine Museum, and the Fethiye Mosque, each narrating tales of the region's diverse cultural tapestry. Proceeding into the Pindos Mountains, we reach the village of Monodendri, a gateway to the Vikos Gorge. Spanning approximately 32 kilometers, the gorge's depth ranges from 120 to 1350 meters, and its width varies from 2500 meters to a mere few meters at its narrowest point. At the gorge's edge lies the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, founded in 1413–1414 by Michael Therianos. The monastery's chapel, a single-aisled basilica, features 15th-century frescoes depicting saints and donors, including Therianos and his family. A short drive leads to Oxia, offering a panoramic viewpoint over the gorge, providing an opportunity to appreciate its geological and ecological significance. Concluding the day, visit Kipi, a village distinguished by its traditional stone arch bridges, such as the Plakidas Bridge, exemplifying the region's architectural ingenuity. This excursion offers a comprehensive exploration of Epirus's rich history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage, ideal for travelers seeking an in-depth experience.
